Researchers at Durban’s KRISP lab find that 90% of samples received last week from Mozambique tested positive for the ‘South African variant’ - this strain, the likely dominant variant now circulating in southern Africa - our story from KRISP:

In Congo, health workers negotiated with armed rebels to administer a new vaccine transported on dry ice on the backs of motorcycles.

Meanwhile, health workers in Cali tell me they don’t have authorization to carry the vax from one part of the hospital to another. I mean...

As someone who works in both Congo and Cali I agree with @Amymaxmen.👇🏼

Effectiveness of Face Masks in Preventing Airborne Transmission of #SARSCoV2

@mSphereJ paper shows why *universal* mask-wearing is so effective in mitigating #coronavirus spread. This is true regardless of how contagious #coronavirus variants become /1

This email broke my heart. Our vaccine rollout just isn’t working if this is how it’s making our seniors feel.

The logistics of mass #vaccine rollout are complicated and we can expect it to improve as the kinks are worked out. That said, we MUST do better at providing clear and safe pathways for our most vulnerable populations -especially our elderly- to get #vaccinated ASAP.

It's a race.
In the next few months, a more infectious #SARSCoV2 will spread exponentially and become dominant.
Can humans outrun it by max mitigation and vaccinating on an exponential, not arithmetic, curve?

3+ weeks later, the answer is no.
But it's still not too late

A reminder: especially among the elderly, some individuals will die shortly after receipt of the vaccine. What we need to understand is the background rate of such deaths. Are they higher then in the vaccinated population? We didn't see that in the trials. Some data from @RtAVM.

Very important to remember. Just because something happens after something else doesn't mean A caused B.

Covid Epi Weekly Jan 22: Racing Against Mutants!

The post-holiday flood cresting but cases, hospitalizations and deaths remain astronomically high. Viral mutants increasingly concerning. Vaccination is our best tool but only one of several we must use more and better. 1/17

This week I went back to some of the public health experts I interviewed last January and asked them to reflect on what we got wrong during those early days of the outbreak and how that shaped its trajectory in the US.

Great article by @MeganMolteni looking back at where we were with #COVID19 a year ago, where we are now and where we need to go to prevent the next pandemic before it starts.

Thank you! I would be nowhere without the women whose footsteps I dance in. While reciting my poem, I wore a ring with a caged bird—a gift from @Oprah for the occasion , to symbolize Maya Angelou, a previous inaugural poet. Here’s to the women who have climbed my hills before.

Magnificent. @TheAmandaGorman you blew me away with the beauty of your words, your message and your presence.
